A reflective case study of one illustrative ambush on a forest road, and what it suggests about passive scores, rolled checks, and giving players something to notice.
Passive scores and rolled checks answer different questions. This comparison looks at what each one does well, where each one strains, and how to choose between them at the table.
A scannable toolkit of lists and prompts for passive Perception: a score tracker, a threshold ladder, reveal phrasings, and a short checklist for the moment between noticing and searching.
Passive awareness is a design input as much as a rule. This design perspective looks at how to build traps, ambushes, and secrets that pay off both noticing and searching.
A step-by-step guide to deciding when a passive score is enough, how to set the number behind a hidden threat, and how to reveal what characters notice without stalling the scene.
When a hidden threat meets a watchful character, two numbers collide. This analysis looks at how passive Perception and Stealth interact, and what that means for fairness, tension, and pacing.
Passive Perception is the always-on awareness score that shapes ambushes, traps, and hidden doors. Here is what it is, where it comes from, and how tables use it.
A reflective look at an illustrative scenario in which a crowded waystation scene stalls, then recovers, and what the week's cognitive load ideas look like once they are pulled together into one small practice.
Narration, handouts, and sketches each carry information differently. This comparison looks at how each channel interacts with working memory, where each helps, and how to blend them.
A scannable reference list of table-side checks for game masters and players: what to prepare, what to say, what to put on the table, and what to cut when a session feels heavy.
Cognitive load is usually discussed as something to fix mid-session. This design perspective asks what a scene looks like when its structure respects working memory from the first sketch.
Cognitive load is easier to understand than to manage in the moment. This practical guide covers recap lines, name cards, sketch maps, and shortlists you can use during play.
