Forging a campaign (20 credits) or a one-shot (10), an adventure recap (5), a stat reroll after the first 2, and retrying one response more than 3 times cost credits directly. Billing and plans, answered
Do I need an invitation to sign up?
No. Anyone can create an account, and the free plan needs no payment details. The product is in open beta, which describes how finished it is, not who is allowed in.
Is it free to start?
Yes. Every account starts on the Free plan with daily allowances for play turns, character generation, coaching drills, and Scry forecasts, and it does not expire. Paid plans raise those allowances and add images, audio, deeper coaching, and stronger models. Free can start 1 of the 6 authored one-shots, Standard 3, and Premium 6. The guided learn-to-play one-shot is included on every plan, the free one too, and it draws on the same per-campaign daily AI-turn budget as any other adventure rather than a separate one.
Does The Dungeon Trainer replace a human Dungeon Master?
No. A human Dungeon Master can run a full campaign using the platform's campaign, character, dice, initiative, messaging, and organization tools. AI assistance and autonomous AI-led play are separate options the table can choose.
Is multiplayer an extra?
No. Hosting a shared table and joining one are included on every plan, the free one too. The plan you are on sets your allowances and how many campaigns you can keep, not whether you can play with friends.
Do I have to use the AI at all?
No. You can run the game yourself and use the app as a virtual table: dice rolled in code, character sheets, hit points, conditions, XP, combat rounds, and one shared transcript. Those actions make no model call, so they draw no allowance and cost no credits, and AI roles at your table are ones you add on purpose.
Do Training Grounds drills use my allowance?
No. Training Grounds drills make no AI calls, so they draw on no daily allowance and cost no credits. They are included on every plan, the free one too. Coaching drills with feedback are a different feature and do count toward the daily coaching allowance.
Does DM practice have its own allowance?
No, it uses the ones you already have. A DM practice session takes one of your campaign slots until you delete it, the AI player's turns draw on your daily allowance of AI turns at human-DM tables, and the review afterwards draws on your daily coaching allowance. It is available on every plan, within those limits.
When do daily allowances reset?
Daily allowances (each campaign's AI Dungeon Master turn budget, AI turns at human-DM tables, Scry forecasts, and coaching drills) reset every UTC day.
How do credits work?
Most actions draw on your plan's daily allowance first and spend credits only after it runs out. A few cost credits directly: forging a campaign (20) or a one-shot (10), an adventure recap (5), a stat reroll after the first 2, and each retry of one response after the first 3. A few daily limits, such as how many Chronicles you can start, stop at the cap and do not take credits. Standard includes 100 credits per month and Premium 300, on top of the daily allowances, and you can buy credit packs any time. Credits currently do not expire.
How are campaigns with an AI DM funded?
A campaign the AI runs, solo or shared, has its own daily AI-turn budget funded by the host. Players taking turns there draw on that campaign budget rather than their personal daily caps, and overflow beyond the budget spends the host's credits.
What happens when I upgrade?
An upgrade applies immediately, and your billing is prorated by our payment provider.
What happens when I downgrade?
A downgrade is scheduled to the end of your current billing period; you keep your current plan until then. Existing campaigns over the lower plan's limit are kept and stay fully usable, but you cannot create new campaigns until you are back under the new limit.
What happens when I cancel?
Cancellation takes effect at the end of your billing period: you keep the access you paid for until then, and your account then moves to the Free plan. You can cancel from your Account settings.
Can I get a refund?
Cancelling and refunding are two different things. Cancelling stops future renewals and is self-serve in Account settings. A refund returns money already charged, is not automatic, and is requested by emailing us. We will consider refunding your first payment if you write within 7 days of that charge. Renewals are not refundable, so cancel before the renewal date if you do not want the next period. A credit pack is refundable only within 7 days of purchase and only while you have spent none of it. Can I bring my own AI provider key?
Yes. You can add your own Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google API key in your account settings; supported text generation then runs on your key. Turns still count against your plan's daily allowances and then credits, whichever key runs them. In a campaign the AI runs, the host's key runs every player's turns, so as a host your key pays for your players, and as a guest the host's key runs yours. Keys are stored encrypted. Some features, such as image generation, still use the platform's providers.
Can I connect my own Ollama-compatible model endpoint?
Yes. You can point your account at an Ollama-compatible endpoint and supported text generation routes there. The endpoint must be reachable from our servers over the public internet and must serve the llama3.3 model. While an endpoint is saved it is used instead of any API keys you have saved, and turns still count against your plan's allowances.
Do prices include tax?
Purchases are processed by our payment provider as the merchant of record, which collects and remits any applicable sales tax, VAT, or GST for your location.
