The short version
- The Dungeon Trainer is a tabletop RPG platform for players and Game Masters: campaigns, a shared live table, preparation and practice tools, and optional AI assistance. It is in open beta, so it changes week to week and occasionally breaks.
- It is 5E compatible, built on the System Reference Document 5.2.1. Character creation, leveling, and combat follow it, with validation in code.
- A human can run the game. Choose "I am the DM" and the app is the virtual table: dice, hit points, conditions, rests, death saves, XP, and combat rounds run in code with no model call. A human-led campaign can run without AI at the table. AI-powered tools and autonomous play remain optional features.
- An optional AI Dungeon Master can run a campaign solo or for a group that chooses it. Dice come from code, not the model: the model narrates, and code checks and records the state.
- Scry forecasts how a scene might unfold before you run it, in qualitative bands. The Coach runs drills with rubric-grounded feedback. Both use AI.
- Training Grounds drills ability checks, saving throws, advantage and disadvantage, and attacks and damage. Drills make no AI calls and are included on every plan.
- DM practice lets a Game Master rehearse a short scene against one AI player, then review it with the Coach.
- A guided one-shot teaches the play loop to new players inside an ordinary adventure, with a ready level 1 character.
- Real-time multiplayer, with turn coordination and one shared transcript, is included on every plan.
- Add an API key from Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google, or connect your own Ollama-compatible model endpoint, in your account settings, and your play runs on your key or endpoint instead of ours. An endpoint must be reachable from our servers over the public internet.
Plans
- Free: free, with daily allowances.
- Standard: $12 a month or $120 a year, in US dollars.
- Premium: $24 a month or $240 a year, in US dollars.
Credits cover use beyond the daily allowances. Current allowances and what each plan includes are on the pricing page.
How the AI is used
The AI writes the fiction: narration, non-player characters, and what happens in the story. Code decides everything with a number attached: dice, checks, damage, leveling, and plan limits. Which providers receive data, how memory works, and how to play with no AI are set out on the AI transparency page.
Rules and licensing
Rules content is the System Reference Document 5.2.1, used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. The Dungeon Trainer is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any other company. “5E compatible” describes rules compatibility only.
